Burel is a fabric made of woven felted wool that comes from a mountainous Portuguese region, Serra da Estrela, and is used by mountain people and shepherds. It's similar to felt, but more rustic, while more soft and fluffy. Burel is woven and felted unlike wool felt that is felted but not woven, becoming more compact and resistant than a common wool cloth and very easy working because there is no need to finish edges once they won't unravel. Burel is waterproof, fire resistant and one of the most resistant fabrics in the world.
These particular features result from its unique making process that begins with the wool being washed and spun before being woven. The wool fabric is then “pisoado” - process similar to felting where the fabric is pounded and scalded. In old times, the whole process ended with burel drying in the sun.
It's a very versatile material that can be used in jackets, capes, cardigans, bags, backpacks, belts, berets and necklaces. Its durability makes it also perfect for blankets, rugs, pillows and other home decor projects.
